COURSE PURPOSE

Knowledge Modules (30 Credits)


  • Health, Safety, Quality and Legislation (8 Credits) — legislation, first aid, quality control, firefighting, HIV/AIDS
  • Environment, Energy Efficiency and Ethics (4 Credits) — environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, workplace ethics
  • Industry Contexts (7 Credits) — road transport sector, modes of transport, career roles
  • Business Essentials (5 Credits) — business principles, communication, customer relations, maps and applied science
  • Transport Risk (6 Credits) — incident and accident management, medical emergencies


Practical Skill Modules (45 Credits)


  • Plan and Prepare Transportation Schedule (20 Credits) — preparatory activities, customer specifications, operational documents
  • Co-ordinate the Allocation of Drivers to Vehicles and Confirm Pre-inspection Reports (15 Credits)
  • Allocate Inspectors/Point Dispatchers and Compile Monitoring Sheets and Reports (10 Credits)


Work Experience Modules (46 Credits)


  • Developing Transport Schedules (10 Credits) — minimum 2 cycles over 3 weeks
  • Assigning Driver Schedules and Collating Trip Documentation (20 Credits) — minimum 2 cycles over 3 weeks
  • Monitoring Trips and Conducting Route Allocation Inspections (16 Credits) — minimum 4 cycles over 5 weeks

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners will be able to:

  • Plan, prepare and develop compliant transport schedules in line with customer requirements and relevant legislation
  • Allocate and dispatch drivers to vehicles and shifts according to standard operational procedures
  • Conduct and confirm vehicle pre-inspection reports and assess roadworthiness
  • Monitor trip arrival and departure times, and conduct route allocation inspections
  • Compile transportation administrative and management reports
  • Apply relevant transport legislation, including the National Road Traffic Act (NRTA) and OHS Act
  • Demonstrate ethical conduct and environmental responsibility within transport operations

ASSESSMENT

Learners are assessed through a combination of internal assessments (knowledge modules, practical skills, and workplace experience) and an external summative assessment conducted over two working days at an accredited assessment centre. The external assessment consists of a written examination (50% — transport schedule planning) and a practical task (25% each for driver allocation and management report preparation). Assessors must be qualified, registered with TETA, and have a minimum of five years' experience as a Transport Clerk.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum NQF Level 4 qualification or equivalent
  • Foundational learning competence is a prerequisite for the award of this qualification
  • Proof of completed and signed Statement of Work Experience required before external assessment
