BRICKLAYING AND PLUMBING TRAINING PROGRAMs

Bricklaying Program

National Occupational Qualification: Bricklayer

Total Credits: 361 Credits (comprising 85 Knowledge, 136 Practical, and 140 Work Experience credits)


COURSE OVERVIEW:


This professional curriculum is designed to equip learners with the comprehensive technical knowledge, practical skills, and real-world work experience required to excel in the construction industry as a qualified Bricklayer. The program focuses on modern construction standards, safety, and high-quality craftsmanship.


The curriculum is structured into three integrated components to ensure a holistic learning approach.


1. Knowledge Modules (85 Credits)

 

Learners engage with the theoretical foundations of the trade, covering essential topics such as:

Health, Safety, and Legislation: Understanding building standards and environmental requirements.


  • Technical Theory: In-depth study of bricklaying, blockwork, masonry, and concrete work.
  • Applied Sciences: Interpreting technical drawings and calculating physical quantities for construction.
  • Professionalism: Training in energy efficiency, ethics, and industry-specific communication.


2. Practical Skill Modules (136 Credits)


Conducted in simulated work environments, these modules focus on the hands-on application of techniques, including:

 

  • Structural Construction: Building superstructures (walls, gables) and substructures (foundations, trenches) using various materials like stone, brick, and block.
  • Specialized Masonry: Constructing decorative structures, arches, lintels, and manholes with corbelling.
  • Finishing & Paving: Mastering jointing, pointing, bagging, and the installation of complex paving patterns and edge restraints.


3. Work Experience Modules (140 Credits)


To ensure workplace readiness, learners must complete extensive on-site training under the supervision of experienced artisans. This phase requires:


  • Repetition & Mastery: Completing core work experiences at least 10 times over a minimum period of 40 weeks.
  • Professional Responsibility: Progressing from observation and assisted tasks to autonomous engagement in construction and repair processes.


Career Progression


Successful completion of this qualification provides a clear pathway toward advanced roles such as Construction Foreman or specialized training as a Bricklayer Trainer

Plumbing Program

Total Credits: 395 Credits


Course Interview:


This professional curriculum is designed to produce qualified plumbers capable of installing, testing, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of water and drainage systems. The program integrates theoretical knowledge with extensive practical training and real-world workplace experience to ensure industry readiness.


Academic Summary


The curriculum is structured into three essential components to provide a comprehensive education in the plumbing trade:


1. Knowledge Modules (121 Credits) 


Learners study the essential theoretical foundations, including:

  • Safety & Legislation: Health, safety, quality, and legislation (NQF Level 3).
  • Technical Theory: Theory of water and drainage, above and below ground systems, and sanitary ware.
  • Specialized Systems: Hot and cold water systems, and maintenance and repair theory.
  • Professional Skills: Analytical thinking, workplace relationships, decision making, and workplace fundamentals.


2. Practical Skill Modules (144 Credits)


Hands-on training in a controlled environment focuses on:

  • System Installation: Installing and testing above-ground waste, below-ground drainage, and rainwater systems.
  • Water Systems: Mastering the installation and maintenance of cold and hot water systems.
  • Technical Craft: Cutting and assembling basic sheet metal and pipe work, and the proper use of trade-related tools.


3. Work Experience Modules (130 Credits) 


Real-world application occurs in the workplace under the supervision of a qualified plumber, covering:

  • Operational Procedures: Executing processes for above-ground soil waste, vent systems, and sanitary ware.
  • Infrastructure: Installing and maintaining below-ground drainage systems and performing basic building work.
  • Water Management: Installation and maintenance of hot/cold water systems and rainwater systems.


Entry Requirements


An NQF Level 1 qualification with Mathematical Literacy and Communication is required for admission.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available for access, exemption, and the awarding of credits.


Career & Articulation


This qualification provides horizontal articulation to other trades like Plasterer and vertical progression to roles such as Office Supervisor (NQF Level 5).
